The scientific community today still have not found a reason as to why people dream. To many, dreams have been a mystery since the beginning of time because they have the ability to impact someone's life socially and mentally.

However, the fact that they do dream—often long after the possibility of realizing those dreams has vanished—suggests that dreaming serves a purpose in their lives. For the characters in Of Mice and Men , dreams are useful because they map out the possibilities of human happiness. Many dreams in the work have a physical dimension: Not just wishes to be achieved, they are places to be reached.
Dreams help the characters feel like more active participants in their own lives because they allow them to believe that the choices they make can have real, tangible benefits. They also help characters cope with misery and hardship, keeping them from succumbing to the difficulties they face regularly. In their darkest moments, George and Lennie invoke their ranch like a spell that can temper their daily sufferings and injustices. George and Lennie almost always fantasize about the ranch after some traumatic event or at the end of a long day, suggesting that they rely on their dreams as a kind of salve. The dream of the ranch offers George, Lennie, Candy, and the others a goal to work toward as well as the inspiration to keep struggling when things seem grim.
But by the end of the story, Steinbeck reveals that dreams can be as poisonous as they are beneficial. In such cases, dreams become a source of intense bitterness because they seduce cynical men to believe in them and then mock those men for their gullibility. Ultimately, the dreams of ranches and rabbits that George and Lennie treasure are the very things that undo them. Seduced by how close he thinks he is to realizing his dream, George fools himself into thinking that Lennie can mind himself and stay out of trouble when past events confirm the contrary. The novella illustrates a story in which different characters that suffer through the negative influences of the economy, views their individualized American Dreams as extremely vital, to an extent where it acts as their only motivating force. At the end of the novella, all of the characters have failed to achieve their dreams, mocking the unattainability of the dream. The American Dream is the national ethos that paints the idealized life of prosperity and freedom for every American. First of all, the illustration of the nature of the dream presents a tragic sense of absurdity. Steinbeck reveals how the American Dream involves different people motivating and assisting each other to believe in the deception and to realize a cooperative narrative together, implying the preposterous nature of the dream.
During the fall of the economy, many worked as itinerant workers, doing physically demanding jobs just to ensure that they have enough pay to sustain their life. He is intoxicated by the indulgence of self-deceit to an extent where he is unable to be aware of the near danger, arousing a sense of pity and horror. Thus, Steinbeck reflects on how the people of the society has willingly fallen into the delusion of the American Dream and tries to awaken the truth behind its appealing surface of it through the novella. The American Dream is defined by the freedom, equality, and prosperity of any American. The repetition of the talk of dreams at the beginning and the end of the play shows how people of the society are entrapped in the delusion entirely.
This implies how people who thought that they were living and dying for their aspirations were actually living for nothing but a fatal deception and fallen prey for the delusion, bringing forth a sense of disquietude. Hence, the author portrays how the American Dream is nothing more than a dream, prompting a sense of unattainability. To conclude, the author presents the dream as absurd, deceptive, and infeasible, deriding the empty promise that fails to realize the hopes of many. This reflects his disillusionment with the American Dream that causes his yearning to provoke thought and to warn the readers. Remember: This is just a sample from a fellow student.
