The Outsiders is about two weeks in the life of a year-old boy. The novel tells the story of Ponyboy Curtis and his struggles with right and wrong in a society in which he believes that he is an outsider. Ponyboy and his two brothers — Darrel Darry , who is 20, and Sodapop, who is 16 — have recently lost their parents in an automobile accident. Pony and Soda are allowed to stay under Darry's guardianship as long as they all behave themselves. The boys are greasers, a class term that refers to the young men on the East Side, the poor side of town. The greasers' rivals are the Socs, short for Socials, who are the "West-side rich kids.
The story opens with Pony walking home alone from a movie; he is stopped by a gang of Socs who proceed to beat him up. The Socs badly injure and threaten to kill Ponyboy; however, some of his gang happen upon the scene and run the Socs off. This incident sets the tone for the rest of the story, because the event tells the reader that a fight between these two groups needs no provocation. The next night Pony and two other gang members, Dallas Winston Dally and Johnny Cade, go to a drive-in movie. There they meet Sherri Cherry Valance and her friend Marcia, who have left their Soc boyfriends at the drive-in because the boys were drinking. Dally leaves after giving the girls a hard time, but another greaser, Two-Bit Mathews, joins Pony and Johnny.
The boys offer to walk the girls home after the movie, but along the way, the girls' boyfriends reappear and threaten to fight the greasers. Cherry stops the fight from happening, and the girls leave with their boyfriends. Pony and Johnny go to a vacant lot to hang out before heading home. They fall asleep, and when Johnny wakes Pony up it's 2 a. Pony runs home, because the time is way past his curfew, and Darry is waiting up. Darry is furious with Pony and, in the heat of the moment, he hits him. Pony runs out of the house and returns to the lot to find Johnny. Pony wants to run away, but instead they go to the park to cool off before heading back home. At the park, Cherry's and Marcia's boyfriends reappear. Pony and Johnny are outnumbered, and the Socs grab Ponyboy and shove him face first into the fountain, holding his head under the water.
Realizing that Ponyboy is drowning, Johnny panics, pulls his switchblade, and kills the Soc, Bob. Ponyboy and Johnny seek out Dally for help in running away to avoid being arrested for Bob's murder. The boys hop a freight train and find the hideout where they are to wait until Dally comes for them. Hiding in an abandoned, rural church, they feel like real outsiders, with their greased, long hair and general hoody appearance. They both cut their hair, and Pony colors his for a disguise. They pass the time in the church playing cards and reading aloud from Gone with the Wind. Dally shows up after a week, and takes them to the Dairy Queen in Windrixville.
Thanks to Dally, the police think that the boys are headed for Texas. This is an important theme for this book, and the book teaches bad morals. The main protagonist, Ponyboy is a greaser, who is portrayed as poor and distinguished by their greasy hair.
Whereas the Socs is portrayed as rich and distinguished by their rich clothes and cars. The interesting part, however, is that Cherry Valance, a soc, described the Socs to be emotionless and apathetic, which led them to use violence to express their feelings. On the other side, Cherry characterized the greasers to be too emotional which led them to antagonize the Socs and causing conflicts. Throughout the book, the theme rich vs poor reflected the Socs and greasers. As the conflict continues, it slowly came to an end when the Socs became more humanized by the death of Bob. E Hinton and the movie by Francis Ford Coppola have numerous similarities and differences. Our thoughts on these particular aspects are very diverse as the universe is.
Many things have been either left out or diminished from the movie, which makes it less interesting as the suspense lessens as you have finished reading the book. Although this might be the case, there were also many similarities between the two sources. Upon watching both they appeared to be somewhat similar. One night Ponyboy Johnny and Dallas decided to go to the drive through movies. The boys sneak into the movies and being the trouble Dallas starts messing with these two Socs girls. Socs are kids who lived on the nicer side of town. They are the popular kids in school and they are more wealthy then the Greasers. Making the two fight and not get along. With Ponyboy and Johnny being the nice kids they are the tell Dallas to leave them along making get upset and leaving.
After that the girls hang around with them for awhile until their boyfriends show up drunk and angry that two other guys are talking to their girls. The girls go home with them and Ponyboy and Johnny leave. Later that night they run into them again and they remember them starting a fight.

After a fight at home with his brother Darrel, Ponyboy goes to the park with his friend Johnny. The Soc gang attacks the two boys and Ponyboy wakes up after nearly being drowned to learn that Johnny had killed a member of the Socs to save him from the attack. Murder in Oklahoma is a crime punishable by the death penalty , so naturally the boys are frantic. On the advice of Dallas, the two become fugitives from the law and take refuge in an old church in the country. A cigarette ash sets the church on fire, which catches while the two are in town buying supplies. The two boys return to find the church afire try to save a group of children who had wandered into the abandoned building prior to the blaze. The roof collapses on them in their attempt to free the children and Johnny is trapped, breaking his back and badly burned.
Back at home, tensions between the gangs escalate over the death of Bob--the Soc member killed by Johnny in the park. It becomes clear that some key members of the respective gangs are tired of the violence which has left their friends either dead or badly injured. The two gangs meet in a huge fight, with the Greasers defeating the Socs. When Ponyboy makes it back to the hospital with his brothers to see Johnny, they realize he is dying. Dallas loses control at Johnny's death and returns to his criminal ways, which ends in a shoot out with the police who fatally shoot him when he raises a gun to them.
After a period of depression and grief, Ponyboy resolves his issues with his brother Darrel and we learn he has returned to school, telling this story as a part of an assignment. While the novel is about the rival of two gangs, it also shows that they are not as different from one another as once they thought. Literature and storytelling affect both the point of view and the characterization of the narrative told by the main character, Ponyboy. The fact that he is able to tell his story from his own point of view is the real reconciliation of the novel, as clearly he has returned to functioning and attending school. By novel's end, he has found a more permanent identity in his story-telling abilities.
This creates an interesting effect since we are clearly aligned with Ponyboy and the Greasers throughout the story, even if at times we see through his bias. However, by the end of The Outsiders , the clear lesson is that storytelling is a process and that Ponyboy is actively overcoming the challenges of identity that being in the gang had created for him.
